On 6-7 December we returned to Doha for the fifth instalment of The Euromoney Qatar Conference. Spanning over two days we welcomed high level government officials, policy makers, issuers, investors and corporate CEOs to discuss Qatar’s strategy in building a new financial ecosystem.
The conference opened with a topical breakfast workshop on geopolitics. Discussing GCC integration, Brexit, China and the new US presidency, speakers from Georgetown University Qatar, Markaz, The World Bank and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy provided a comprehensive overview of the current situations and highlighted opportunities in this time of instability.
The official conference opening began mid-morning with an official keynote address from H.E. Mr Ali Shareef Al Emadi, Minister of Finance, State of Qatar, followed by a keynote address from QNB’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Ali Ahmed Al Kuwari.
As the morning continued we welcome two international keynote addresses, firstly from George Magnus, Economist and Author, who delivered a fascinating presentation on politics and economics. Hafez Ghanem, Vice President, MENA at The World Bank then followed discussing inclusive growth in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Day one came to a close with a panel discussion on Qatar’s reaction to the new macroeconomic headwinds. Speakers from Qatar Financial Centre Authority, Qatar National Bank, Qatar Islamic Bank and McKinsey and Company joined together to explore the future of hydrocarbons, the introduction of VAT in Qatar, monetary policy in the region and the efficiency and direction of public spending in the country.
The conference continued on Wednesday 7 December with Euromoney welcoming three investors to the stage: Meshal Jaber Al Faras, Janus Capital Group; Rupert Bastick, AES International; and Talal Samhouri from Amwal LLC, to discuss regional and international portfolio investment strategy.
The day continued with a series of panel discussions and keynote interviews looking at a more digital Qatar and SMEs and Innovation with speakers including: Khalid Al-Hashmi, Assistant Undersecretary, Cyber Security, QCERT; Mahmoud Raef, Country Manager, PayFort Qatar; Marouf Mahmoud, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Tasama Sports Development; and Aysha Al Mudahka, Chief Executive Officer, Qatar Business Incubation Center.
