The Iceland Conference

The Euromoney Iceland Conference was held on Tuesday 12 April 2016 at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel in London – one of the first investment events of its kind since the crisis.

The event gathered an extremely full audience of around 175 delegates for the day of editorially driven panel discussions, sponsored workshops, keynote speeches and one-to-one interviews. With a focus on the investment environment, the conference looked at how investors view Iceland since the announcement that capital controls will be lifted. Given the timing of the conference, just days after the Prime Minister stepped down, political risk inevitably became a part of the discussion. It was said that the political situation would most likely delay the planned privatisation offerings because of the elections now planned for later this year. Regardless, there was interest and enthusiasm from the investors to hear more about this country and its impressive recovery story.

We were very pleased to hear keynote speeches from: H.E. Bjarni Benediktsson, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Iceland; H.E. Arnor Sighvatsson, Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Iceland; and Robert Parker, Senior Adviser, Credit Suisse.

Following a recent return to the capital markets, the country’s reformed banks were of course a point of key interest and formed a large part of the agenda. We were also delighted to hear from: Esther Finnbogadottir, Head of Funding and Debt Management, Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Iceland; and Rafnar Larusson, Chief Financial Officer, Landsvirkjun.

A busy and exciting event, the day created the ideal environment for investors to come together with the key players from the country all in one place for a snapshot on the future of the Icelandic economy.
