Directors Report for the Euromoney Egypt Housing and Real Estate Finance Conference 2010:
I was very pleased with this year’s conference – I think it was the best yet. The atmosphere was different and far more positive than 2009. There was a feeling of enthusiasm among the participants and a real sense of movement within the market.
Aside from the media coverage, knowledge sharing and networking there were three main areas we are working on between now and the next conference.
Market Studies: the conference called for a wide-ranging and highly detailed market study to establish demand (as opposed to want) patterns nationally. As well as this the participants agreed that a study on the Egyptian people's understanding of mortgages would be useful when creating an awareness campaign and tailoring their marketing. We are working with research agencies and the Ministry to create such a report. We hope to be able to publish the results at the 2011 event.
Mobilising institutional investors in the real estate market: it was clear that there is a need for institutional investors in the real estate market. We will be running a workshop at our September conference to discover why domestic institutions are not investing in real estate. Second, Euromoney is undertaking research and will present a plan for reaching specialized international investors in this sector. This will involve the Euromoney event in March 2011 in London as well as specific targets and product research. This is already underway.
Professional education: the conference was in agreement that much more education was needed across all segments - consumers, media, market practitioners and officials. There was some discussion of professional qualifications and standards in the context of an association. Much is already being done through the IEEI at AUC. Euromoney has offered support to both these initiatives and we believe AUC is best placed than to move them forward.
So, we have a lot of work to do between now and next year’s event. We will be integrating some of this work into the other projects we have running in Egypt and abroad. I hope that we can involve you and that you are able to work with us to drive forward this vital market.
