InvestHedge Forum 2014

"…The most important event in the hedge fund investing universe."
Michele Gesualdi, CIO and senior partner, Kairos Partners

The 9th Annual InvestHedge Forum took place on 23-24 September 2014 at The British Museum in London.
The Forum, which this year was themed 'Exploring New Frontiers', focused on how to push the boundaries of hedge fund and alternative investing and new investment opportunities such as direct lending and bitcoin, as well as the new incarnation of funds of hedge funds as highly experienced solution providers.

Themed around space and science fiction, the Forum programme explored life beyond hedge funds in sessions such as Dr. Who: What are the new alternatives?, as investors look for ways to enhance returns in a world where hedge funds are now mainstream. A series of panels also took a fresh take on classic strategies such as event-driven, equities, smart beta, global macro and credit.

When it comes to portfolio construction and implementation, what might have once looked like the realms of science fiction, through managed accounts, smart beta, liquid alternatives and a host of other tools, now offers investors an entire galaxy of options. The 2014 InvestHedge Forum was designed to help investors navigate what might look like a black hole to create all-weather multi-asset class portfolios that could withstand an asteroid attack.

Betsy Battle, founder and chief investment officer of Lone Peak Partners gave a thought-provoking opening keynote address, exploring what has happened to hedge fund performance, volatility, correlations and capture ratios and why, and how these figures compare with the expectations of institutional investors. Betsy’s informative and engaging presentation set the scene perfectly for the discussions which followed over the two days of the conference.

Other highlights of the conference included a keynote speech by Theodore Economou, chief executive officer of the CERN Pension Fund, who spoke about the ‘creative destruction’ facing the investment industry as it confronts a cycle of global deleveraging and how hedge funds can help investors meet the challenges they face.

Michelle McGregor Smith, chief executive officer, BA Pensions Investment Management Limited also gave a keynote address on the second day of the event, speaking about the evolving relationship between investors and hedge funds, as well as the challenges currently facing investors and hedge funds alike.
