New Directions, New Opportunities
The Euromoney Qatar Conference took place in Doha on 9-10 December, bringing together over 500 delegates representing Qatar's financial and business elites together with senior government officials.
Day one of the conference saw His Excellency, the Prime Minister officially open the conference under his patronage. His Excellency, the Minister of finance, Mr Ali Shareef Al-Emadi, delivered a keynote address to a full conference room. Mr Al-Emadi's keynote was followed by our international keynote speaker, Philippe Legrain, visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and Politics.
Mr Legrain's speech, observed by the Prime Minister and several government officials, focused on the economic outlook for 2019. Legrain highlighted the end of US-led liberal globalisation, the ramping-up of the US-China rivalry, and a global slowdown caused by global deleveraging as the main trends to look out for.
The morning continued with a keynote address from the newly promoted acting CEO of Qatar National Bank (QNB), Mr Abdulla Mubarak Al-Khalifa. This was followed by a keynote interview with Joseph Abraham, CEO of Commercial Bank. Day one finished with a panel about Qatar's economy. Featuring perspectives from the US government (Lesley Chavkin; US-Qatar business interests (Mohammed Barakat); Qatar Development Bank, Georgetown University, and Khalid Al Sayed, senior advisor at the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee.
Day two opened with His Excellency, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Saoud Al-Thani, Governor of the Qatar Central Bank. The Governor outlined the latest government figures for economic growth in Qatar, demonstrating the country's resilience to the blockade and commitment to both the World Cup 2022, and Qatar's Vision 2030.
The Governor's speech was followed by panel discussions on fintech, asset management, and (for the first time at a Euromoney middle east event) sustainable finance.
