The Euromoney Qatar Conference returned to Doha on 5-6 December for it's sixth annual gathering. We welcomed senior government officials, policy-makers, institutional investors, financial institutions, and corporates. With the tagline 'Digital innovation: the financial future', the conference explored Qatar's economic performance and future potential through it's Vision 2030 plan in spite of the challenges faced by the Siege.
We opened the day with a breakfast workshop, discussing the global macro outlook, focusing on commodities, global interest rates, quantitative easing, and the future of jobs and economic models in light of growing automation and technological advancement.
The conference was once again co-hosted with the Qatar Central Bank. We were delighted to received the patronage of His Excellency the Prime Minister, who attended the official conference opening. The opening featured an unprecedented keynote interview with His Excellency, Mr Ali Shareef Al-Emadi, Minister of Finance, who provided critical insight into Qatar's positive financial state of affairs despite the Siege.
The morning continued with international keynote addresses from Hamish McRae, principal economic commentator of the Independent Online, with the title 'The world economy: the next thirty years'; and from Sarkis Yoghourtjian, the recently retired but always engaging former advisor on banking regulation and supervision at the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System, whose keynote discussed 'the central bank dilemma'.
Day one culminated with the 'Qatar's Economy' panel, featuring a distinguished and diverse line-up of financiers, economists, and corporates weighing in on the evolving and diversifying Qatari economy, including fascinating discussions on infrastructure from His Excellency, Dr Saad Al-Muhannadi, President of Ashghal, Qatar's Public Works Authority.
Day two was opened by His Excellency, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Saoud Al-Thani, Governor of the Central Bank. His Excellency updated delegates on bank liquidity, central bank policy, and the future of Qatar's lending environment.
The Governor's speech was followed by three granular panel discussions. The breakfast workshop on deploying capital in expensive markets discussed the international investment outlook. This was followed by two discussions on cyber security and fintech, both being areas of focus for Qatar's leading innovators.
Through our new Qatar conference app, each discussion featured an interactive audience poll, allowing our delegates to weigh in on the issues.
Euromoney would like to thank all our sponsors, speakers and delegates, without whom the event would not be possible. We look forward to returning to Doha in 2018 for the 7th Euromoney Qatar Conference and seeing you all there.
