Event Overview

On 9 May the inaugural Euromoney Kenya Conference took place in Nairobi - co- hosted by the Central Bank of Kenya and the Kenya Bankers Association. Welcoming over 300 attendees, 27 fantastic speakers and a wide media coverage, the conference successfully analysed the development of the digital business and financial ecosystem in Kenya and wider Africa; and examined how innovative approaches and collaboration between the worlds of finance and technology can create growth.

The day kicked off with welcoming remarks and a speech delivered by Dr Patrick Njoroge, Governor, Central Bank of Kenya. With a shift in interest towards the fintech industry in recent years, Africa has become a significant innovation hub. Kenya was the pioneer! The Governor’s speech focused on how his country has leveraged mobile phone technology and made remarkable strides in financial inclusion. There are many challenges but the opportunities are greater. He believes that the Kenyan economy has a bright future.

The Governor then took part in an exclusive onstage interview with Euromoney’s Christopher Garnett.

"The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) are proud to co-host the inaugural Euromoney Kenya Conference in Nairobi. The choice of Kenya as the host country for this conference reaffirms its global reputation of embracing innovative and disruptive technology as a tool for financial inclusion."

Dr Patrick Njoroge, Governor, Central Bank of Kenya

The lively and insightful on stage conversations continued with Mr Lamin Manjang, Chairman, Kenya Bankers Association and Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin, Senior Vice President for the 2030 Development Agenda, United Nations Relations, and Partnerships, World Bank Group.

Following an exciting morning, Euromoney then welcomed panellists from the London Stock Exchange Group, Standard Chartered Bank, African Development Bank Group and Kenya Commercial Bank Group to discuss challenges and opportunities for the year ahead, the macro-economic environment, and the financial sector outlook for Africa.

The afternoon continued with a panel discussion evaluating expansion opportunities of an innovative digital and financial ecosystem. The great line up of speakers included: FSD Kenya; Nest; Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology; Kenya Bankers Association; Oracle Technology Systems Kenya; and Branch. The discussion provided the audience with a wide variety of perspectives and insights on this crucial topic.
In-between the panels, the audience had the opportunity to hear a selection of successful and innovative case studies from M-Kopa Solar, Nailab, JUMO, Google, BFA and Kwanji.

The day came to a close with a lively debate about the evolution of the digital business and financial ecosystem across Africa and how different countries are meeting their challenges through it. The panel was the perfect end to an exciting and informative conference because it brought together international voices to reflect on the day’s discussions.
However it was Bomas of Kenya that delivered the final performance during our cocktail reception.

Euromoney would like to thank all our sponsors, speakers and delegates, without whom the event would not have been possible. We look forward to welcoming you all to the event again in 2018.
