The Sterling Conference 2013

"The Sterling Conference was excellent, providing good coverage of the UK market for corporates and providing useful insight into the central bank viewpoint and investor preferences. Invaluable!"
James Kelly, Deputy Treasurer, Rentokil Initial

The Euromoney Sterling Conference was a great success once again when it took place on 25 September at Haberdashers’ Hall, London. For the 4th year, the event attracted almost 200 key issuers and investors in the sterling market to discuss the latest trends and outlook for this important bond market.

Robert Stheeman, Chief Executive of the UK Debt Management Office, opened the conference with a presentation of the DMO’s view of the Gilts market (please see presentations link for a copy of his slides), which was followed by a panel of market participants from Pimco, Insight Investment, J.P. Morgan Asset Management and Santander who gave their view of the market from the other side of the coin. There was a mix of views in the panel, but there was a broadly optimistic tone to the discussion which was slightly unexpected.

Also in the opening session, Jamie Dannhauser from Lombard Street Research and Azad Zangana from Schroders debated what the Bank of England would look like under Mark Carney, which ended with both speakers agreeing that Governor Carney faces an uphill struggle and is unlikely to ever meet the extremely high (and unrealistic) expectations for his tenure.

Further discussions throughout the day focussed on the bank capital market, the corporate bond market, infrastructure finance, SSA issuers in the sterling market and a closing insightful panel of investors.

Overall we are delighted with the success of the event and would like to thank all attendees, speakers and of course, our sponsors Lloyds Bank, Santander Global Banking & Markets and London Stock Exchange for their support. We look forward to reconvening next September.
