A year has passed since our last Euromoney Conference in Cairo, but so much has changed. What we thought was a short-term growth-fed blip in inflation proved to be just the start of a major price and cost uptrend which affects every country in the world. Markets have moved sideways (or downwards!) on the news and the global investment climate is no longer the warm and calm environment it once was.

Egypt should not, however, step backwards to the old-style of central planning and control. The reforms of the period 2004-2008 will not be undone as senior policy-makers know that there is no viable alternative to encouraging liberalisation and efficiency within the economy. The challenge for Egypt now is to beat inflation and to sustain growth. The task for the government is to keep its commitment to the momentum of the reform process as well as delivering support for those who need it most.
