Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB)


Since December 2016, Søren Elbech is the treasurer of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Beijing. Søren’s responsibilities are to raise funds from the capital markets, to invest AIIB’s liquidity in low-risk assets, to maintain its credit ratings, and to advice AIIB’s senior management on key capital investment and management issues, including asset/liability management (ALM) policies and borrowing programs to ensure financial prudence and sound banking practice. Moreover, to oversee the administration of AIIB’s financial resources and delivery of treasury services to internal and external clients, and to provide overall leadership in sustaining and deepening sound ALM practices to operationalize AIIB’s financial and risk management framework.  Before that, Søren has held various positions related to capital markets and financing: From 2014 to 15, Søren was senior vice president, head of global deal origination for Vestas Wind Systems in Washington DC. In the period from 2007 to 2014, he was the treasurer of the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington DC, and in 2002 to 2007 Søren worked at Eksportfinans in Oslo, holding various positions, including head of funding and debt investor marketing (2002 to 2005), deputy director of finance and head of capital markets (2005 to 2006), as well as executive vice president and treasurer (2007); In the period from 1999 to 2000 Søren worked as senior funding officer at Inter-American Development Bank and during 1996 and 1999, he worked at Nordic Investment Bank in Helsinki, holding various positions, including funding officer (1996 to 1997), senior funding officer (1997 to 1998), as well as head of funding (ad interim) between 1998 and 1999. Before this, Søren held various positions in the banking industry in his native Denmark (1985 to 1996).  Søren is an advisor to Origin Markets in London as well as a board member of ICRW (International Center for Research on Women) in Washington DC. Søren holds an Executive MBA with honors from The Norwegian School of Management, Oslo (2005), an Executive MBA from ESCP-EAP, Paris (2005), and a Graduate Diploma in Finance from Copenhagen Business School (1992).
