Sahar El Damaty currently holds the positions of deputy managing director, country chief risk officer, and board member of Emirates NBD Egypt. Sahar has rare expertise in the banking sector spanning more than 30 years, during which she has assumed many leadership roles in international and local financial institutions, before joining Emirates NBD Egypt in July 2014. She began her career as a researcher in fiscal policy at the International Monetary Fund. She then joined The World Bank, where her responsibilities included constructing financial models for expectations and future flows from The World Bank’s budget. After gaining extensive experience in the international banking sector, she took on the role of senior credit analyst within the credit and marketing department at CIB for companies across many sectors. Sahar then assumed the role of head of credit department and portfolio management at the Social Fund for Development, where she restructured credit policies and financial models in conjunction with The World Bank and other international institutions, as well as credit appraisals of all projects presented to the Social Fund. She also monitored and supervised the Social Fund’s credit facilities across 2,000 branches of public sector banks, provided credit facilities for small and micro projects, prepared credit plans and programmes for the Fund, and monitored all activities of banks offering credit facilities. At the same time, she taught credit and financing to banks at the American University and the Egyptian Banking Institute, making her one of Egypt’s most renowned credit instructors. Sahar’s outstanding performance enabled her to join the Arab African International Bank, where she took on several managerial positions, including head of risk management, through which she approved all credit facilities at both local and foreign branches in London, Beirut, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. She also managed portfolios, updated credit policies, and financed SMEs. Sahar joined HSBC as country chief risk officer and board member. She supervised corporate and retail risk management, in addition to internal control, operational risk, market risk, and coordinated with the Central Bank on all credit related terms. Her position at the bank entailed many responsibilities including reviewing and approving all credit facilities, corporate financing, managing the financial institution unit, and managing security and fraud risk. Additionally, she was a member of the executive committee and the ALCO committee, as well as heading the operational risk committee, managing and supervising the implementation of Basel 2, and participating in the finalisation of the business strategy and determining the target market. In July 2014, Sahar joined Emirates NBD Egypt as deputy managing director and country chief risk officer. Her outstanding performance and efficiency have enabled her to become a member of the board of directors in January 2015 until now.  At the bank, she is responsible for credit risk management, retail and corporate risk, internal control, operational risk, investigation department, and market risk. She also coordinates with the Central Bank of Egypt on all matters related to credit and any other issue requested by the bank.  Furthermore, Sahar is a member of the ALCO and the executive committee. In addition to portfolio management and supervising financial reports issued by the bank, she has an active role in finalising the bank’s business strategy and identifying target markets. She has also assumed the following positions: board member of the Arab African Bank; board member of Schweppes for soft drinks; board member of HSBC; board member of Alcatel-Lucent; member of the executive board of Egyptian and Emirati Businessmen; and board Member of the Egyptian Credit Bureau I-Score. Sahar obtained her MBA from the American University in Cairo with a major in international business and a minor in marketing. She graduated from the American University in Cairo with a BA in economics and political science.
