Independent Financial Journalist

Patrick Werr is a financial journalist and writer who has been based in Egypt for 26 years. He began his career as a reporter in Saudi Arabia, then joined Reuters in 1987, working first in Bahrain, then in Nicosia, Kuwait and Cairo. Starting in 2000, he worked for two years as the Cairo correspondent for Bloomberg, then later spent three years as the editor at EFG Hermes's research department before returning to Reuters in 2009 as its Egypt financial correspondent, a position he held for four and a half years. He now works freelance, writing a weekly column on the Egyptian economy for Abu Dhabi's The National newspaper. He has degrees in economics and Middle East studies from the University of Washington in Seattle and studied advanced Arabic at the American University in Cairo's Center for Arabic Studies Abroad. He is also researching a biography of Mubarak al-Sabah, who ruled Kuwait from 1896 to 1915.
