Thomas Were is an agriculture economist with an MBA in strategic management and a PhD in entrepreneurship finalist. Thomas started his career in the microfinance sector before moving into the agribusiness arena. He has over 20 years of working in agribusiness development in diverse value chains and agro inputs systems across the Eastern and Southern Africa region on projects funded by diverse donors including AfDB, IFAD, FAO DGIS USAID, ILO and UNOPs. He has contributed to the design of multiple inclusive and sustainable smallholder agriculture value chain development, and promoted public private partnership initiatives in agribusiness across the region. Notable models such as the PPP in livestock marketing have received national government recognition and been adopted as best practice, and he is currently spearheading a PPP initiative in the Zambia agriculture sector supported by African Development Bank. Thomas has been a director of the Jitihada National MSMEs Competition in Kenya funded by World Bank and aimed at increasing productivity and employment in the MSME sector. He is an affiliate member of Kenya Institute of Management and currently the agriculture sector leader for SNV in Zambia.
