The second annual Euromoney Australian and New Zealand Debt Capital Markets Forum in Asia was a great success. The event brought together a targeted audience that included some of Southeast Asia’s largest institutional investors as well as key Australasian issuers.
We were delighted to have the Honourable Bill English, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Minister for Infrastructure from the Government of New Zealand, open the forum. Fresh from delivering the New Zealand 2011 Budget, which forecasts the return of a surplus in 2015, the Minister highlighted the country’s economic recovery as being led by strong Asian demand for agricultural commodities, the rebuilding of earthquake-damaged Christchurch and an improving national savings rate.
Following the Minister, Robert Nicholl, the chief executive officer of the Australian Office of Financial Management (AOFM), gave a presentation on Australia’s growth forecast, diversified economy and debt issuance plans. The presentation also covered the future of the Commonwealth Government Securities (CGS) market, the government’s pledge to maintain liquidity and the nation’s plan to review increasing the government debt ceiling.
Over the course of the day, Australasian issuers representing sovereigns, semi-sovereigns, agencies, financial institutions and corporates shared their credit story and issuance strategy through keynote speeches, panel discussions and informative workshops.
