On 30 September Euromoney held the fourth installment of its successful Real Return conference in New York. This dedicated inflation linked products event united a group of the leading market experts including issuers, investors and financial intermediaries from across North America. This year the focus of the proceedings surrounded the increasing possibility of more QE by the Fed, the debt crisis and what this all means for the inflation debate.
Inflation experts were keen to discuss a range of issues affecting the US inflation-linked market including unconventional monetary and fiscal measures, the threat of deflation and the decision not to include TIPS in the Barclays Aggregate Bond Index. Although concerns were raised about the current climate and the affect of market instability, speakers were positive about the growth of the market in index-linked securities overall.
Colin Kim, the new head of debt management at the US Treasury, opened the event with an overview of the TIPS market and future issuance plans. This set the scene for a series of high-level panels and sponsor-led workshops discussing such issues as the TIPS floor, inflation indices, portfolio diversification utilising inflation-linked products, and trading models. Dennis Gartman closed the conference with an insightful address on the current investment climate and which assets are attractive these days.
Now in its fourth year, this conference provided an unparalleled opportunity for all the major inflation players to discuss this important market. Thanks to all our sponsors, speakers and delegates for making the conference such a success once again. We look forward to re-convening in New York next September.
