On 11-12 May Amsterdam was host to the seventh annual Real Return conference. This dedicated inflation linked products event united a group of the leading market experts including issuers, investors and financial intermediaries from across Europe and North America. This year the focus of this conference surrounded the debt crisis and what this meant for the inflation debate.

Inflation experts were keen to discuss a range of issues affecting the inflation-linked market including unconventional monetary and fiscal measures, debt-ridden economies and the demographic crisis. Although concerns were raised about the current climate and the affect of market instability, speakers were very positive about the growth of the market in index-linked securities, once recovery is seen as sustainable.

The main conference was primed with a half day training session in which investors, whether seasoned in inflation products or relatively new to the market, gained invaluable advice from the specialists on product and market developments.

George Magnus, the man credited with having predicted that the US sub-prime crisis would lead to recession, kicked off the day’s proceedings with an engaging address about the escape from ‘debtville’. This was followed by a series of high-level panels and sponsor-led workshops discussing such issues as regulatory changes, long-term trends for pension funds and liability driven investing.

Now in its seventh year, this conference provided an unparalleled opportunity for all the major inflation players to discuss this exciting and expanding market.
