On 25 March in Amsterdam a group of the leading bank issuers met with investors and financial intermediaries from all over Europe at Euromoney’s inaugural Bank Finance conference. The purpose of this conference was to form a much-needed debate on the future of bank funding in the post-crisis, newly- regulated financial environment.
Bank issuers discussed in detail how bank finance structures have been transformed and how an overhaul of the traditional balance sheet is what is needed to meet new regulatory requirements. Speakers were keen to caution that 2010 would continue to be a challenging and unpredictable year for bank finance.
The conference kicked off with an engaging address from Peter Praet on the future of a ‘holistic’ regulatory framework for financial institutions. This was followed by a lively debate involving key European regulators, which discussed the potential impact of extensive regulation. The subsequent panels covered a range of subjects including: bank funding; bank capital; covered bonds and securitisation; and investor appetite for bank securities.
The conference provided an excellent opportunity for all market participants to discuss the bank finance issues that are affecting them the most.
