The Euromoney Kuwait Conference 2014

For the sixth year, and with a record number of delegates registered, Euromoney’s Kuwait Conference took place on 9 September at the JW Marriott. The theme for this year’s event was New Dynamics of Finance and Investment.

H.E. Anas Al-Saleh, Minister of Finance, opened the conference with a cautiously optimistic speech, focusing on the global and regional growth outlook, as well as the vital need for Kuwait to expand its private sector to create jobs, growth and economic diversification. H.E. Mohammad Al-Hashel, Governor of the Central Bank of Kuwait, addressed the issues of financial stability and macro prudential policy making in his speech, focusing on how Basel III will be implemented in Kuwait and affect local and regional banks. Our audience then heard three key banking leaders take part in live interviews. Omar Alghanim of Gulf Bank, Hamad Al-Marzouq of KBA and KFH, and Anwar Al-Mudhaf of Ahli United Bank-Kuwait, discussed the importance of technology in global financial services, global banking regulation, the importance of social responsibility, developing the right people and the right culture, and their strategies and business models for growth.

Ralph Acampora of Altaira provided a more upbeat presentation on the global investment outlook than one may have expected in the current environment, presenting the case for a more bullish market outlook – provided you manage risk properly.

Our panels of local and international experts debated the new dynamic of the Kuwaiti banking sector given the changes that have taken place since our 2013 event and the opportunities created in the Government’s new commitment to push ahead with many large projects; the geopolitical risk environment and what that means for investment and international energy markets, so important for Kuwait; and the real estate investment opportunities that GCC investors should be taking advantage of, both at home and abroad.

Euromoney Conferences is delighted with the success of the event, and would like to particularly thank all our sponsors without whose support the event would not have been possible.

We look forward to reconvening in 2015 for our annual update of the Kuwait financial markets and investment climate.
