EuroHedge Summit 2014

Top names meet for the industry's 11th big annual get-together in Paris

The 11th annual EuroHedge Summit in Paris saw a high-quality line-up of speakers and panellists come together for Europe's big annual springtime hedge fund industry conference.
The 11th EuroHedge Summit took place at its usual venue at the Palais de la Bourse, in the heart of the French capital, on 29-30 April – under the overall theme this year of 'Strategies for Growth'.
Besides keynote speakers Philippe Jabre, Tom Sandell, Davide Serra and Paul Crean, numerous other well-known industry figures took part in a series of high-level panel discussions over the two days –  addressing the big issues facing the industry, the outlook for specific strategies, new growth opportunities and other key topics covering business management, regulation, asset-raising and operational issues.
Top allocators taking part – from both the consultant and the fund of fund sides of the investor advisory community – included Robert Howie of Mercer, Christopher Fawcett of Permal, Stephen Oxley of PAAMCO, Guy Ingram of Albourne, Chris Jones of bfinance and Tim Wilkinson of Sciens.

Completing the big opening macro panel on the first morning included an industry veteran with long experience as a hedge fund investor – Gerlof de Vrij, former head of absolute return strategies at Dutch pension fund giant APG, who is now a portfolio manager with the big macro hedge fund group Blenheim.
De Vrij  joined a high-class panel comprising Gavyn Davies of Fulcrum,  Diana Choyleva of economic consultancy Lombard Street Research and Jonathan Wood of strategic and geo-political risk group Control Risks – in a scene-setting session that tackled the most important economic, policy, market, geo-political and security issues facing managers and investors at a time of high opportunity but also high instability.
Discussing the opportunities and challenges facing individual hedge fund businesses and the industry as a whole was a high-calibre panel of CEOs and business leaders comprising Luke Ellis of Man Group, Marc Hotimsky of CQS, Jack Inglis of AIMA and Jacob Gottlieb of fast-growing US-based hedge fund group Visium Asset Management.
In terms of individual strategy areas, a session dedicated to volatility – a topic of intense and fast-rising focus among investors and managers in what looks likely to be a very volatile and unpredictable year –  featured Benjamin Clerget of BTG Pactual, Bruno Usai of Mako Investment Managers/Pelagus Capital, Zoltan Esler of Paris-based systematic trading group CFM and Pierre de Saab of long-standing Geneva-based volatility specialist Dominice & Cie.
On equities, the panellists this year included 2013 EuroHedge Award-winning managers Seth Kirkham of New York-headquartered European equity specialist Dabroes Management and David Yarrow of veteran London-based long/short equity manager Clareville Capital.
The Summit also featured a number of dedicated strategy sessions on credit and event-driven/activism – two of the hottest areas for investors and managers at the moment – while Cheyne co-founder Stuart Fiertz was among the hedge fund managers discussing the new opportunities for growth as banks pull back from many of their traditional lending and financing activities.
Away from individual strategy areas, a number of business-focused panel sessions focused on a variety of important market-structure and operational management issues such as the central clearing of interest rate swaps and other fixed-income derivatives, risk management and fund distribution.
On regulation, representatives from the Alternative Investment Management Association and the Hedge Fund Standards Board were among the leading industry figures discussing the array of significant regulatory changes facing hedge funds, their investors and their counterparties – as well as other key related industry topics such as best practices in fund governance and the evolving relations and partnerships between managers and investors.
Europe's largest and best-attended event in the annual hedge fund calendar, the EuroHedge Summit regularly draws a high-quality attendance of leading investors, managers, thought-leaders and counterparties from the global hedge fund industry.
HedgeFund Intelligence would like to thank everyone who attended this year's Summit for helping to make the event such a success.
