The Euromoney / ECBC Covered Bond Congress once again attracted the major issuers, investors and intermediaries in the international Covered Bond market. The pre-Congress Sponsoring Banks’ Party and the main day Congress gathered together the who’s who of the Covered Bond market. 1,066 participants attended in total, the largest ever Covered Bond forum. From the biggest to the smallest, the most established to the newest issuers and institutional investors from around the globe gathered in Barcelona during this time of sovereign debt crises, Eurozone woes and US downgrades to debate and discuss the future of Europe’s largest private bond market.
Overall, the day’s talks reassured that the Covered Bond market is still open and functioning but nervousness remained. Throughout the Congress participants stressed that significant risks remained for market, as well as for leading economies.
Positives are on the horizon. Attendees were buoyed by the hopes for Australia’s domestic market, the continued issuance by New Zealand’s banks and the strong UK issuance we have seen the past year. Transparency and labelling were hot topics on the discussion rostrum. For the first time, smaller interactive roundtables were trialled as a new format. Received positively, with some tweaking these sessions will return on the 2012 Congress agenda.
We are looking forward already to the 2012 Congress on Thursday 13 September in Munich when we will reconvene to find out whether the fears for a full-blown public debt crisis are exaggerated, and to find out how the global Covered Bond market is coping and, hopefully, thriving.
Euromoney would like to thank the ECBC, all sponsors, speakers and delegates for helping to reaffirm the Euromoney / ECBC Covered Bond Congress as the meeting place of the market.
